LASIK surgery (Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a popular type of laser vision correction that is used to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
With LASIK surgery, an excimer laser reshapes the inner layers of the cornea, the transparent dome that covers the front of the eye, to enable light rays to focus properly onto the retina (the tissue that lines the back of the eye). Depending on the type of vision problem, the cornea will be treated to have a steeper, flatter, or more rounded curvature.
Laser eye surgery is a term widely used to define procedures that correct refractive errors in the eye (which lead to impaired vision), with the help of a highly focused light.
Based on a full optical system analysis, an ophthalmologist can ascertain which type of laser surgery is necessary for you to attain clear vision. The different types are:
A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens inside your eye and is considered a normal part of the aging process. When light rays enter a healthy eye, they pass through the naturally clear lens where they are focused onto the retina to provide a clear image. When light rays enter an eye with a cataract, they are distorted which creates a hazy or blurred image.
Cataract surgery is recommended once your vision starts to interfere with your daily activities. An examination by your eye doctor along with a discussion of your vision complaints will determine if it is time to proceed with surgery.
The retina is an extremely fragile tissue that lines the eye’s back wall, consisting mostly of nerves. It is responsible for sending nerve impulses according to the light reflected against it, to the brain, which then forms images based on those impulses. Thus, if the retina is damaged, the images created in the brain will not be accurate, bringing about a change in your vision.
