LASIK
Most people have heard of LASIK laser technology to eliminate the need for glasses or contacts. But do you know how LASIK works?
According to Eric J. Poulsen, MD, a board-certified eye physician and surgeon, LASIK works by correcting the shape of the eye to provide proper focus. With nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism, the surface of the eye, or cornea, is improperly shaped, so images are not focused properly on the retina inside the eye.
Dr. Poulsen explains that LASIK is performed in a specially equipped outpatient surgical suite while you sit in a reclining chair. A few anesthetic drops are applied, and an eyelid holder is placed to prevent blinking. A thin flap of cornea is elevated, exposing the inner layers of the cornea. The excimer laser is programmed precisely according to your eye problem, using wavefront technology when possible, and the laser sculpts the cornea to the correct shape. The flap is sealed back into place and the whole process is complete within minutes.
Most people achieve somewhere between 20/20 and 20/40 vision without glasses or contacts. That’s the vision you need to free yourself to do the things you want without glasses.
